Church of St. Peter and Paul

Description

"Built in 1524 on the site of an older church, which certainly existed at the time of the *Vinodol Code* in 1288, and likely even earlier. In the first half of the 18th century, it was expanded, renovated, and given a Baroque style. The church was set on fire at the end of 1944 but was restored in the 1980s."

Additional information

From the rich treasury of the parish church of St. Peter and Paul, we highlight the Renaissance relief of the Madonna and Child, also known as the White Madonna, crafted in white marble by Florentine masters. Another masterpiece is *The Washing of the Feet* by Jacopo Palma the Younger, a painting of high artistic value. Noteworthy as well are the Renaissance tabernacle with an iron grille from the 15th century and the grand marble main altar, the work of sculptor Antonio Michelazzi.

The Church of St. Peter and Paul is also home to the so-called Milonja Cross, a 13th-century cross of the Krbava bishops, brought to Vinodol by Christopher, Bishop of Modruš. Today, it is preserved in Rijeka.

In the 13th century, Bribir was under the rule of the Frankopan family, whose members took part in drafting the *Vinodol Code* in 1288. It later came into the possession of the Counts of Celje, became a royal town under King Matthias Corvinus, and was subsequently held by the Zrinski family until 1671, when Petar Zrinski was executed in Wiener Neustadt.
